We could all use a vacation. Where better to go than the Bahamas? However, the Bahamas are quite big. Where should you go? The Exumas are a collection of 365 tiny islands in the Bahamas in the Caribbean that are perfect for just about everyone in your vacation group. Here are 5 reasons you have to go to Exuma for your next vacation.
1. Great weather
The Exumas experience fantastic, tropical weather. It’s the perfect escape from the harsh winters that occur further north. You will get the chance to be in your summer gear the entire trip. Despite the warm weather, you also get a ocean breeze. The weather is great every single time of the year. June through October do get some rain and high winds, though. It’s best to go during the winter months.
2. Beautiful
There are a number of beautiful places in the world. The Exumas are a great example. The waters are extremely clear and crystal blue. This makes for some excellent snorkeling. You’ll be able to see everything in its natural beauty. You will find colorful fish, coral, and even caves to explore. There is also a fantastic mile long sand bar that you simply must visit. It exposes itself at low tide. The gorgeous beach is one of the greatest photo opportunities for tourists because of how beautiful it is. It’s also a great place to lay out or enjoy a romantic beach picnic.
3. Swim with… pigs?
When we think of pigs, most of us think about land animals bathing in mud. However, the pigs in Major Cay are quite different. When the world was facing Y2K, people were worried about a lack of resources, especially food. Being an island, the people here knew they wouldn’t have the same access to food as others. They came up with the great idea to import pigs. Well, naturally, someone had to come feed the pigs every day. The pigs would hear the sound of the food coming and swim out into the water in excitement. They kept getting farther and farther. New generations followed suit. Now, there are a number of pigs that feel completely comfortable out in the water with all of the guests.
4. Enjoy the other animals in the area
Swimming pigs aren’t the only amazing animals in the area. The climate and ocean life provide the opportunity for plenty of tropical animals that people in North America aren’t generally familiar with. There are plenty of iguanas walking around. Most of them are tame enough for you to interact with a little bit, but you want to be careful. You can also swim with sharks. Compass Bay is a popular place for people to swim with nurse sharks. Don’t worry. Nurse sharks are harmless. While in the area, be mindful to show the upmost respect for the animal life. Being on the top of the food chain, it’s our responsibility as humans to help keep the populations plentiful and healthy.
5. Learn about history
There is a lot of history to be found in this part of the world. One of the most fascinating attractions is the large, 970-acre plantation called the Hermitage Estate. You can learn a little more about the slave trade. You will also learn how a plantation was run. If nothing else, it’s extremely interesting.
You will also learn about some of the earliest known living things on earth at the Exumas Cays Land and Sea Park. You will find algae known to be over 2000 years old. Perfect for the history or science buff in your group.
You and your family deserve a great vacation. There aren’t many better places to go than the Exumas in the Bahamas. If these reasons aren’t enough to convince you to go, you will find many more reasons when you get there.
