4 Lawn Care Tips Everyone Should Know

Lawns are beautiful and contribute to a home’s aesthetic look and feel. Growing a good lawn requires proper and regular maintenance. According to good lawn care practices, emphasis should be put on ensuring that the lawn grass has the right set of conditions to achieve optimal growth and thereby give the splendor of beauty as it should. Lawn experts propose 4 major lawn care tips that everyone should know, as hereby outlined.

Removal of weeds and any external material

If the lawn grass is to grow to the desired height, color, and beauty, then it should be accorded the right care as far as weed removal is concerned. Weeds such as flowers, herbs, and other types of grasses, if allowed to grow together with the lawn grass, can be detrimental to the lawn’s ability to thrive.  Failure to remove such weeds may also lead to competition for nutrition and sunlight, thereby causing discoloration of the lawn grass. Such weeds should be regularly uprooted as soon as they are noticed.

When uprooting the weeds, proper care should be taken to avoid damaging or bruising the lawn grass. Preferably, the entire loan should be watered to loosen the soil, thereby making it easier to uproot any weed. The entire uprooting process should be done by hand. The use of chemicals such as herbicides to kill weeds growing on lawn grass should be avoided as much as possible as some chemicals may harm the lawn grass, especially if the grass is tender.

Other types of common material that should be removed from lawn grass include twigs and fallen leaves which may deprive the lawn grass of the much-needed sunlight. Mushrooms, animal droppings, and wood splinters should also be removed to prevent instances of decay which generally kills lawn grass.

Proper lawn drainage

When caring for a lawn, emphasis should also be put on ensuring that the entire lawn area has proper drainage. Such drainage prevents the lawn from becoming waterlogged in cases where rainwater does not drain away naturally. Waterlogging causes damage of the entire lawn grass as a result of either decay or yellowing of the grass as a result of the lawn being deprived off vital sunlight. When seeking to ensure proper drainage, the entire lawn area should be flattened before the lawn grass is planted. The lawn area should also be slightly inclined with a gradual slope to ensure rainwater can drain away easily.

The soil’s permeability levels to rainwater should also be well checked and balanced to ensure that rainwater is not retained due to poor soil permeability. The soil permeability parameter also comes in handy in ensuring that the lawn grass’ roots can easily penetrate the ground for a firm and steady growth.

Mowing the lawn

Lawn mowing should be undertaken regularly to control the grass length. When mowing the lawn, care should be taken to ensure that the lawn mower’s cutting height is appropriately adjusted to ensure it leaves the right grass height. Mowing the lawn to a very low height leads to increased chances of the grass drying up or decaying.

Also, the lawn should not be mowed when the soil is wet and soggy to prevent instances where the bruised grass starts decaying or experiences poor rejuvenation and regrowth. The borders and hedges of the lawn should also be appropriately trimmed with the necessary trimming tools such as shears to ensure a uniform and aesthetic look.

Good lawn watering practices

When watering the lawn, proper care and watering practices should always be observed. Firstly, the lawn should never be watered during the heat of the day. Preferably, lawns should be watered in the evening such that the water has sufficient time to permit the soil overnight. Watering lawns during the heat of the day cause a withering effect on the grass.

Additional good lawn watering practices that may come in handy for lawns include observing and irregular watering schedule, thereby replicating the natural weather patterns which generally makes the lawn grass to acclimatize and become drought-resistant. When watering the lawns, the right amount of water should be used; preferably in a sprinkler irrigation-type of watering to prevent accumulation of water in puddles which may affect the growth of the lawn grass.
